excelsior commons
Location: Excelsior, Minnesota
The Commons project is the heart of the larger master plan for the redevelopment of the 13-acre municipal park, a historic landmark located in the center of the city of Excelsior on Lake Minnetonka. Its character defining features are “The Knoll” with its tree features, the “Lawn”, the “Port”, and the ballpark with its integrated WPA constructed seating.
The project was envisioned to better serve the evolving needs of park users, improve the existing infrastructure, and accommodate a variety of existing and new activities. Constructed in two phases, the Commons project replaced the existing, tiltup concrete panel bandshell and striated concrete masonry concessions structures that obstructed views of the lake and unique site topographies. The new Bandshell and Concessions structures create a central area for concerts and shaded exterior spaces for informal gathering, community activities, and additional baseball field seating while opening up views to the landscape and lake. The addition of a green roof and significant site drainage upgrades protect the lake from stormwater runoff.
